I only saw owned dogs and stray cats. I'd ask this in the Spanish one, but I don't know the words for stray or owned and online translators are pants.

  1. Yes there are...both kinds...

Most strays, both dogs and cats are picked up by the local pound or Animal Protection Association.

The dogs are kept in their compound for adoption, the cats are neutered at their facilities and after being marked, (to avoid them being picked up more than once), are returned to the area they were found in, where they help keep the vermin population down.

There is always some kind soul in the vicinity who will make sure they don't go hungry

    ...

I myself have 2 cats, and they share their meals with a local stray who has "adopted" our home. He even comes in and sits on my lap for a little while some evenings, but he is too independent to stay inside the house (unless it is storming outside...) And my cats are not really too fond of him!

Outside I've created a sort of "pup tent" out of an old waterproof jacket, a box and a cat-cushion for him and when it rains he sleeps there.

In Spain there is a campaign on TV at the beginning of every summer to try and make people stop from abandoning their pets. Many people do so when they go on holiday. Leaving the animal somewhere on the roadside. The dogs often end up run over by a vehicle or wander around looking lost until the pound takes them in... The slogan for the campaign is "This summer don't abandon your pet....he would NEVER abandon you".

There are more and more of these animal protecton associations popping up in Spain, mostly privately run, and helped out with private donations... And they do a lot of good...

You can adopt animals in most of them, and all they ask for is a small donation to help with the upkeep of the other animals...

There is even one association for abandoned donkeys (yes there are abandoned donkeys, believe it or not!).

  2. abuela Nany really seems to know what she's talking about!
