In the Outer Hebrides U.K. there were a race indigenous before the current population, some of whom still survive; they are known as 'gypsies', and have very large bottle noses ( a distinctive Neanderthal trait). Does anyone know anything about these people, or any other possible Neanderthal survivors?

  1. No

  2. Yes Neanderthals survive today.  Why some are on Yahoo Answers!  :D

  3. No.  Neanderthals died out 30 to 35 thousand years ago.

There is an legend, that there are a people called the "almas", who are supposed to be a lost tribe possibly neanderthal.  But like the yeti, bigfoot and sasketchewan there is yet no evidence of them.

  4. The Gypsies are from India.

  5. No, there are no full Neanderthals that are still alive today. Their species died out with the spread of modern humans into now Europe where the Neanderthals were lviing. But it is still up to debate on whether they were completely killed off, or interbred with humans.

  6. No, they all died out about 30,000 years ago (though they might have interbred with homo sapiens type humans, maybe).

You can't judge relationships by one single feature or custom.

Example: New Zealand Maoris and Canadian Eskimoes (Inuit) greet each other by rubbing noses - does this make them related? the Maoris have the same shape of nose as American Natives ("red Indians") so are THEY related?

No, similar characteristics can develop in response to outside factors, such as weather, and don't show relatedness.

The people known as "gypsies" moved into Europe from northern India about a thousand years ago, and were not indigenous to or residents of the Hebridies. Maybe you got the name wrong?

  7. You have obviously never been to the west coast of Ireland.

  8. Yes!

All senior Republican politicians are a sub species of Neanderthal, developed before ole Neander became so advanced.

If you see a Republican politician in the wild (a typical US street) and harm them you are in violation of US Law covering protected species.

    On a less serious note:

The Neander genome is being traced, as we write! We'll know soon as the smart people finish the process.

  9. Even though you said Gypsies i think you mean an entirely different people read The Farfarers by Canadian author Farley Mowat about a people known as the Albans who inhabited Spain and the British Isles before the Celtic people , they are thought to be distant cousins to the Basques.

  10. I read somewhere that red-haired people have some neanderthal in them....

  11. Gordon Brown ;-)

  12. I have never heard of any of the Roma or Shelta or Tinker clans even visiting the Outer Hebrides let alone living there before the Celts and Vikings arrived!

I think maybe you have come across the claim that some of the so called "Black Irish" in Western Ireland have Neanderthal genes?

There are claims that hominid cryptids spotted in Russia may be Neanderthals? Central Asia and Siberia are a long way from the Hebrides though!

  13. So easy a caveman could do it.

  14. At the International Congress of Zoology 1958, Dr. A.J.E. Cave found in his studies that the famous neanderthal skeleton found in France over 50 years ago is that of an old man who suffered from arthritis.
