Question:

Are there any test that can be done besides a HSG to check to see if fallopain tubes are blocked?

My doctor put me on antibiotics for PID about 1 month ago and went back to see him when I got done with them and that same day he put me on clomid. I called back Monday to see if he could send me for a HSG and the office said they don't send patients for that test. I want to know if they are blocked because if they are it is a waste of time to take the clomid. Thanks

  1. I'm surprised they put you on Clomid before doing a HSG (which is part of the basic infertility testing). My doctor would not put me on Clomid until I had an HSG. I would get a second opinion.

  2. A HSG or hysterosalpingogram is when dye is injected through the cervix and the fallopian tubes looked at by X-Ray.

Other tests than can be done is a laparoscopy, surgery to look inside the abdomen and a hysterosonogram where water is injected through the cervix and a sonogram is done.

  3. HSG would be the least invasive and expensive test to check your tubes but if you are just seeing an OB/Gyn then they rarely ever do HSG's, they just RX Clomid for a few cycles and if it fails then they send you to a reproductive endocrinologist who would then do the HSG. If you don't have insurance to cover the HSG then I would do the Clomid for a few cycles and see what happens.  If your insurance does cover infertility testing then by all means ask for a referral to an RE and ask for the test.
