  1. The only communities I've heard of at this point are overseas in Norway and Sweden and Switzerland.

You could do all this on your own and inspire others, but it's a big leap to go first.

  2. the eco-village network is one place to start http://gen.ecovillage.org/

also transition towns like Totnes http://totnes.transitionnetwork.org/

one point about being self-sufficient is that you don't need government funding. That is only required to patch holes in the unsustatinable industrial growth society economic model - infinite growth on a finite planet!!

  3. I don't know about towns doing this, but an ethanol production facility in Minnesota is well on its way to coming "off the grid". They use byproducts from the production process in a fluidized bed reactor to generate steam for the facility. They were the first in the country to implement this technology and several other ethanol producers have since followed suit. They are replacing their natural gas fired grain driers with a microwave drying system and installing wind turbines to provide electrical power for the entire plant.

  4. Check out the story of Greensburg Kansas, there town got wiped out by a tornado and they decided to rebuild green.

  5. There are lots. Depends which country you are in but try googling words like permaculture community commune etc

People think commune means weird closed off religious cult or hippies... but in reality they vary so much. Many are just like-minded people who share resources and get some kind of program going and be true friends with their neighbors. They probably also work in regular jobs outside the commune and do other stuff.

Yes I think it's great for people to be more self suffieienct, good on all levels.
