  1. Metrolink goes from Inland Empire to Oceanside.  From there you can switch to either COASTER or Amtrak to go down to San Diego.

  2. Call the nearest Amtrack office for a schedule of their trains. there are some major train lines which connect with off line cities with busses.

  3. You can go to www.amtrak.com and then click on schedules and type in the dates/places and it'll give you all the info you need.  :)

  4. http://www.amtrak.com/

  5. True to the above answers , best go to amtraks website, there will be no confusionlater... cheers

  6. There are none that go directly on the route you are looking for.  Where in the Inland Empire are you starting?

Metrolink runs trains from Riverside to Irvine, from there you would transfer to Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner for the trip the rest of the way to San Diego.

San Diego to Tempe is much more difficult; it would require a connection in LA which is out of the way.  The train that runs from LA and runs through southern Arizona (the Sunset) only runs three times a week, and runs through Maricopa, in the middle of the night, several miles south of Phoenix/Tempe.

For San Diego to Phoenix you might see if Greyhound or Crucero buses runs along Interstate 8 to get you there.
