  1. No there are not any passenger trains that go directly from Chicago to Boston.  You will end up having to change trains in New York.

    Go to:

    -Amtrak.com

    -Click "Routes"

-In the Departs Box (enter): Chicago

-In the Arrives Box (enter): Boston   (Choices are Back Bay, North Station, South Station or Westwood)

-Then you can choose the appropriate trains that you will want to take.  As far as I know, you will only need to change trains once.

  2. ,Looks like the Lake Shore ltd still runs from Boston to Chicago.

There is also a Lake Shore Limited from New York to Chicago, and it looks like they are combined in Albany, NY.

If you're seriously planning a trip, get on the phone and make reservations, I read in the NY "Post " today where Amtrac reservations are substantially higher than they were last year at this time., since airline fares are going  higher and higher.

  3. Amtrak train 448/449, The Lake Shore Limited, operates daily between Boston and Chicago.

This train has two sections, one for Boston and the other (48/49) for NYC.  They join/break in Albany.

It's always amusing when people make stuff up rather than giving an accurate answer.  I've never ridden 448/449 but I know for sure it exists because I've ridden 48/49 many times.

  4. The previous answerer might be right, but I do know that as late as 1976 or 77 there was an Amtrak train that left Boston's South Station, parallelled the Mass Turnpike, stopped in Albany, and then followed the former New York Central route to Chicago, stopping at, among other stops,  Syracuse, Buffalo, Erie Pa., Cleveland, and on to Chicago. I know because I took this train from Sou' Station to part of the way west, and I know the conductor announced Chicago as the final stop.
