Are there any trustworthy websites that can be used to find unclaimed money?

My father has retirement money he never received from a company in LA that closed many years ago. A relative received a letter stating the money was available. However, the relative divorced his wife and disappeared soon after. We have no way of finding out anything without the letter. I was wondering if one can actually find that kind of information online. Thanks in advance.

  1. You should contact the PBGC  www.pbgc.gov

Companies are required to submit documents to the PBGC that list pension benefits that are owed to people when they terminate employment.  When those companies close and they terminate their pension plans they have to search for missing participants to contact them about their benefits.  If they don't find you, they pay an amount to the PBGC to take over the liability for those benefits.  Therefore, you may be due a payment from the PBGC.

In any case, it is worth an email to them to see if they have your benefit on record.
