Are there any tutorials for designing your own blogger template???

Question

I have seen people's blogger's that have pictures of them or their families imbeded into the layout, at the header ... and I was just wondering if any of you could tell me how to do that, or direct me to a tutorial. I am somewhat familiar with HTML, but I don't have any photo editing software. What are some options for me???
