Putting aside all the new age prophecy stuff, is there anything we know will happen with the planets in our little corner of the universe?

What about this "pole shift" theory? Is there anything to it?

all bullwhockey.... if there's anything that is going to happen in 2012, it's that a lot of faces will get red from the embarrassment that hits when NOTHING happens..... and the pole shift, if you're asking about the MAGNETIC pole shift is something that happens normally that you won't be too affected by.... but as for a full shift of the poles, that's not gonna happen.... so relax... life goes on as usual...........

2012 is just the revealing of the 'antichrist' or the 'man of lawlessness' at the middle of what Jews and Christians call the 7 year Tribulation. Satanists and many pagan cultures from every corner of the world all throughout history have celebrated this like  the Sumerians, Babylonians, Cherokee, Hopi, Chinese I-Ching (confirmed by Terence McKenna), Mayans (Pacal Votan), Egyptians, Celts, etc. This evil event is called "the abomination that causes desolation" that will be set up in the Jewish Temple’s Holy of Holies when the antichrist is imbued with the power of satan himself. When will Yeshua Ha'Mashiach (Jesus) come? Only God Himself knows, but very soon. If you believe or not, that is up to you; either way it still comes.

Precession of the Equinoxes, happens every 26,000 years. Some people believe this is why the Poles will shift or re-orient themselves with another constellation, although Im not sure how that works exactly. The Poles are said to slowly shift over thousands of years, so the Pole Shift hypothesis wouldnt really hold, unless of course it happens for another reason and not just solely precession. I think our current understanding of physics and the universe is off, and doesnt allow for a "pole shift" theory to stand as valid, we dont know everything there is to know about the universe and why it works the way it does, so to even discredit it as nonsense would be assuming that we know everything about the universe and we simply dont. I think its worth having some attention drawn to it, afterall Einstein seemed to be interested on the topic. If you ask me, yes the poles will shift, why, because the universe is more dependent on magnetism than gravity. Thats just my 2 cents worth though, what do I know, Im not an astrophysicist.

There will be no 'galactic alignment' unless you mean the Sun passing in front of the Milky Way, which happens every year. A shift of the magnetic poles is something that takes thousands of years and may not start for thousands of years and has nothing to do with 2012. The new age cranks confuse this with a shift of the rotational poles. The suggestion that the rotational poles are going to shift to a new location in 2012 is even more ludicrous.

No, nothing is going to happen.  Pole reversals take hundreds and sometimes thousands of years to complete, it's certainly not something that will happen in one year.  And besides, the geologic record does not correlate mass extinctions to pole reversals, so there's no reason to think it would harm us even if it did happen.

Our magnetic poles are a byproduct of the Earths core rotating within

the mantle. this also stabilizes the geo poles.

if there were to be any shift,(this would take hundreds,even thousands

of years) we would have a lot more to worry about than where the sun

Well, I'm not sure if you consider this to be "New Age" stuff but the Mian Calendar is ending in 2012 and since most calendars are linked/based on lunar cycles i guess you say that would be an astronomical occurrence.  Some people think that they Mians ended the calendar with the year 2012 because that is when the world will end.  I think the guy who was writing their calendars just got tired and said "okay, That should do it for nw".

Nothing special in 2012, astronomically speaking.  In fact, when it comes to planetary "alignments", 2012 is an alignment-poor year.

The position of the Winter Solstice (the point on the ecliptic with the southernmost declination) crosses the Galactic equator in early 2013.

The position of the Winter Solstice makes one complete round of the sky every 25,800 years (it is a direct consequence of the precession).

This means that Dec. 21, 2012 is the last time that the Sun will be at the position of Winter solstice on one side of the Galactic equator.  This is the reason for the "New Age" stuff.

The Sun passes the Winter Solstice position every year (for us in the northern hemisphere, it marks the beginning of winter); for the Mayans, it marked the start of the year (New Year's Day).

The Sun crosses the Galactic equator twice a year.

Neither event is very rare.

Earth's magnetic polarity reverses every 700,000 years on average (although the intervals are not very regular), and we are "due".

The reversal process takes at least 1,000 years (and the average is around 5,000 years).  During the reversal process, the position of the poles at the surface do wander, but the field does not disappear -- we continue to be protected from the charged particles of solar wind and cosmic rays.  Earth's field would take over 15,000 years to decay.  If ever a reversal was to take longer than 15,000 years, then maybe, the field could go to zero (we'd lose our magnetosphere -- our protection from charged particles -- no more Northern Lights, until the field re-establishes itself).

Even though the position of the pole has started to move a lot faster over the last decade, other signs are not present, so we are not even sure that it has started.  When I was studying magnetism 25 years ago, the process had not started yet and most of us thought that it would not be until the 33rd century (the 3200s).

Even if it has started in the last 25 years, since it takes at least 1,000 years to kick in, it will obviously not be done in time for the Big 2012 Hoax Off.

Pole shifts - no, not a chance. The Earth’s axis of rotation is stabilised by the Moon’s gravity.  The forces needed to case a flip are very large and do not seems to be available from any source.

Magnetic poles flip - no, they will just keep moving as usual. They are likely to change ends at some time in the geologically near future but it will take hundreds to thousands of years to happen. Meanwhile, the magnetic field will not disappear, but it will probably get more complex.

Solar maximum - expected in 2011, maybe 2012 and it happens every 11 years anyway.

Predicted planetary “alignments” are completely false. The positions of the planets will be about as far from an "alignment" as you can imagine. The next "alignment" of the major planets is expected sometime after the Sun burns out. Even if it did happen the question would arise "So what?" Where is the physical connection between Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn etc?

Gravity? Like to calculate how strong the gravitational effects of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn is on Earth? Multiply the masses of the planets together, divide by the square of the distance between them and then multiply by the gravitational constant, which is a rather small number. Now add them all together and you still don't have a hill of beans.

Newton knew how to calculate this about 300 years ago, but our planetary alignment freaks never care to do the calculation because the result would make them look as silly as they are.

Venus will transit the Sun in June 2012, just as it did in 2004 and on a regular cycle before that. No noticeable effect then except on astronomers, some of whom will take measurements, no expected effect this next time.

Galactic central plane - we are near it, so astronomers say, but we have always been near it, though nobody actually knows exactly where it is. No exact "alignment" is possible because of the angle of the ecliptic to that of the galactic central plane. A rough “alignment” of Sun, Earth and the galactic centre happens twice every year and nothing happens. Even if there was an exact “alignment”, the question would be "So what?"

Everyone who predicts disaster in 2012 is a fool or a fraud.  No exceptions.

No unusual planetary alignments occur. Only alignments that have occurred before and will again.

Their magnetic poles shift all the time. The exact location of the magnetic north pole moves all the time, and has moved many miles in your lifetime. The magnetic poles have compoletely reversed many times in the last billion years, according to magnetic traces seen in some rocks. Some scientists think we may have another reversal soon, where soon is in a few thousand years. And it would probably take thousands to reverse. It would not happen in any one year, like 2012.

pole shift is completely fine it's when the earth reverses it's magnetic field so it goes from south to north instead of north to south

all compases in the world will point south after the shift

it takes like 700 years for it to shift

while it is we will witness auroras(northern lights) everywhere around the world

the only thing is that we are more exposed to solar radition but other than that it's nothing to concern about because you can't do anything about it

and the earth's magnetic field shifts every 8 million years i believe

so it's not something new
