i loved the twilight series...but i'm an adult. i don't mind s*x in the novel, just not graphic, i'm not the romance novel type. and while i like the southern vampire series, the religious stuff throws me off of the vampire vibe, like the "Good shepherd of Judea!" outbursts by the main character. alright, well thanks in advance.

  1. Already Dead by Charlie Huston and it's sequel, No Dominion, are great adult vampire novels. They have a dark, gritty feel to them and are definitely adult in their content. His vampires can be violent and aggressive, and that reflects in the novels. But the characters are very interesting and intelligent, and the book isn't gory for its own sake, the violence serves a purpose.

Nightwatch by Sergei Lukyanenko features vampires for a large chunk of the story. The plot veers away from the undead and focuses more on shapeshifters and magic-users in modern day Moscow, but it's a fantastic book all the same. It works as an allegory for the Cold War, and it's one of the best modern fantasies/horrors that I've read in ten years.

'Salem's Lot by Stephen King is a classic, so if you haven't read it you might want to give it a shot. Again, it's adult in its violence, but it has a very fascinating story and gripping suspense.

Hawke's Harbor by S.E. Hinton is another good vampire story set in, I believe, the 50s. Examines the relationship (neither romantic or sexual) between a vampire and the human bound to him throughout the years.

And if you haven't read the original Dracula by Bram Stoker, you may find it worth your time. Told through newspaper clippings and correspondences, it's the definitive vampire novel.

  2. the southern vampire novels by charlaine harris. (also known as the adventures of Sookie Stackhouse)
