Are there any veterinarians that make house calls to put down pets?

As I understand it, normally you take your pet to a veterinarian's office when it comes time to put your pet down (e.g. - when they're very sick or in pain). But, I always thought this added extra stress to the pet having to be taken out of the home in their final moments.

I have two beautiful cats that I love dearly. I know someday their time will come, but until then we are enjoying life as much as possible. Personally, I believe it would be better if a pet could be put down in one's own home, rather than having to be driven away to the veterinarians' office. I think the pet's final moments should be spent in their home they've known all along.

I was just wondering, do any of you know if veterinarians offer this service - to make house calls to put pets down?

  1. I'm in the UK and I do know of two who will do it ( they are town based - our rural vet wouldn't touch smaller animals).

it was offered to my friend when he had to get his dog put to sleep. I know there's an extra charge involved but I couldn't tell you how much it is.

I'd suggest you do some local research and phone around your local surgeries and ask them.

  2. Mine does.  Especially for very large pets that cannot get into or be lifted into the car.  Ask around.  Sorry your friends are getting on.  I am sure you have given them a good life.  Best of luck.

  3. I'm in the uk and some of the rural practices will but not the city ones or town ones they are just to busy and if you cant get your animal there they arrange for them to be picked up by the vet practice

  4. Some veterinarians do make "house calls" - usually more expensive than a regular office visit.

I have always taken my cats to the vet's office for euthanasia.  I feel when they reach that point the symptoms of illness far outweigh any "stress" of the trip to the office and they have always been under their regular vet's care throughout their final illness.
