  1. What about finding a person, family, small cause or organization you can get to easily rather than a large "place"?

Most churches have projects that could use some help. A food pantry needs help sorting, the office needs help folding and getting out newsletters (something you can do for other groups as well); the children's nursery could use help washing and disinfecting the toys during the week and maybe an extra person on Sunday morning or other times the church is open. A church could also match you up with a family or elderly person that needs help. Maybe there's a family with parents who're having to deal with an illness and a kid who isn't getting enough attention. You could read, watch TV with him or her, go to the park, whatever.

I'm only 53 and I'd be thrilled if a kid just walked down my street and offered to thread needles for "bifocal wearers" so I could replace on some buttons. Mowing grass for an elderly person on a fixed income or help putting away groceries or going along to do the bending and stretching at the store would be great.

  2. Most cities have a volunteering hotline or a volunteer center that can help match you up with a group or organization that fits what you're interested in.
