  1. in canada, ISEO (international student exchange-Ontario)

has an exchange program for a year in japan. Im sure, ISE in USA or something has a similar program

  2. Studying abroad is always a great way to travel and live abroad for a period of time, especially as a student. I am a program advisor with Intrax Study Abroad and we provide long-term and short-term study abroad programs for high school students. We have a great program in Japan for the summer. It is 4 weeks in length and takes place in the month of July. Students are staying at dorms at the National Olympic Memorial Youth Center and attending intensive Japanese classes at a local language school. They are also get to travel to Mt. Fuji, Kamakura, Kyoto, etc. It is a great program for students who is going abroad for the first time or on his own. For more info, check out the following website: www.intraxstudyabroad.com

  3. Any good foreign exchange program will work. Make sure it's CSIET listed (www.csiet.org). Also, check with his school counselor for a recommendation as a program is only as good as its local representative. Generally, AFS, Aspect, Rotary and YFU are reliable everywhere. Rotary is the cheapest, but most competitive.

In such a program he would live with a Japanese family and attend Japanese school.
