Question:

Are there any wild animals that can mate with cats?

I found a kitten in the middle of nowhere whose moma had abandoned it because its legs were a little messed up (she's fine now though). I saw the moma and she was a scrawny little tabby always beggin for food and kinda looked like a mini puma (she was all yellowish). Anyway, now the kitten is a year old, and she doesn't have the short hair her mom had. It's SUPER long and her tail almost looks like a fox's. Plus, she'll eat anything (I mean LITERALLY. She ate a carrott the other day!) She's almost the fiestiest cat I've ever met. She's just playing, I know, but she'll tear up your hand in an instant. I was just wondering if there's any wild animal that could have mated with that little tabby to make this kitten. My cat's pretty huge too, but it's all muscle under the thick fur. Maybe it's just a certain breed of cat. Either way, if anyone knows I'd be interested. She's also a pretty multi color brown that you see a lot in tabbys, but her mother wasn't that color at all. Thanks for any info!

  1. It's hard to make a guess without seeing a picture, but it sounds like the father may have been a Maine Coon, which is a huge breed compared to the little housecats were more familiar with. Big cat, puffy tail, long hair...all are traits of Maine Coons.

  2. both of my cats are related to wild ones my big one is lynx mix and i know some vets say its not possible but i saw the mom and i think its very possible but my other cat has bobcat in him, these are not fancy wild breeds that people buy the lynx was abandoned and my friend breeds the bobcat cats and couldnt sell this one b/c it had a long tail they are both about a foot and a half high but my big one is really just fat!

  3. Your kitten's daddy might be a long-haired breed of cat; maybe a maine coon if it is a large cat. Maine coons also have that big fluffy tail which would explain that...Without a pic I can't be definite, though.

Kittens aren't always the same color as their mother. I have two males and they are completely different colors, from the same litter. [Even though they both have the same stripey pattern.]

Most kittens are pretty aggressive when they play. Mine are 6-7 months and if we don't keep their claws clipped then they can definitely tear you up. Your kitten's aggressiveness probably has nothing to do with what kind of cat she is.

    Hope this helped!

  4. No, cats cannot mate with other animals, they can mate with feral cats though.

  5. yes

  6. It's probably just a breed characteristic, but cats can breed with bobcats (those usually have short tails, though!), and servals, ocelots, etc.  You might be interested to look up bengal cats, they are a feisty, dog-like breed.
