Are there breed specific docile dogs?

I asked a question earlier asking for a definition of a docile dog. I was wondering if there are breeds that are docile or whether it depends on specific dogs' nature or even how they're 'brought up' so to speak.

  1. Some breeds are more prone to be docile, but dogs are individuals, just as we are. Choose a friendly breed, eg. Labrador or spaniel, and meet the parents. Their  temperaments will tell you a lot.

  2. I think it's just generally down to  nature of the dog, if you want a docile dog go to a shelter and get an older dog, they are generally docile and just quite happy for attention and love without being boisterous as most younger dogs are.

From experience believe it or not greyhounds are very docile they spent most of there time sleeping and don't need as much exercise as you would expect

any dog can be docile, it doesnt matter what breed. it depends on the dog's personality itself.

  4. big ones! labradors!-great temperaments!

  5. A lot of the personality does depend on the upbringing and whether or not the dog was ever homeless or anything like that. My favorite breed of docile dog is an English Bulldog or a French Bulldog. People tend to think of Bulldogs as vicious, but that's not true.

  6. I agree with SouthernLady. English Bulldogs are very docile compared with any of let's say the Terrier breeds, English Setters. They are big, sweet lugs.  One thing to remember though is that just because a dog is docile does not also mean that it is low maintenance dog. English Bulls are very high maintenance.  My opinion is that many purebred dogs are overall more high maintenance than say a mutt.  If you want a dog you don't have to walk day and night (even though they love to do so) a Bulldog is a good choice. Also when you decide on your breed consider the life span, health issues, grooming, etc. so that you can get a dog that suits you the most. Good luck & have fun!

  7. any breed can be docile, it depends on the training, docile just means that its a well obedient dog, and to have that you must train.

  8. I have never known a retreiver to be aggressive, although I have met a nasty Labrador.

  9. All breeds have docile dogs and ones that are more feisty.  The dog's breeding and early socialization will have a major affect on the dog's later life.

However, the larger breeds are typically more laid back.  Dogs like Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds, St. Bernards, these dogs are all typically very slow moving, loveable dogs.

  10. That is a genetic trait, not something you train or put into a dog. Some dogs are born with that trait and some are not.

All dogs need obedience training to learn their place in the pack and to live happily within that structure.

    Hope I helped!
