I want to make some sugar biscuits for a friend of mine, but he's allergic to butter and margarine. Are there any recipe's that do not call for those ingredients?

  1. Try this recipe:

    Ing:

        * 2 cups whole wheat pastry flour or white flour

        * 3/4 cup white sugar, preferably vegan

        * 1/2 cup white flour (for dusting)

        * 1 teaspoon baking powder

        * 1/4 cup applesauce

        * 1/2 cup canola oil or safflower oil

        * 3-4 teaspoons vanilla extract

        * 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

    Dir:

       1.  Mix together pastry flour, sugar, baking powder and cinnamon. In another bowl, whisk the applesauce, oil and vanilla together until well combined.

       2.  Pour wet ingredients into dry, and stir to mix. Then knead them into a dough. You may have to add some more flour or some of the white flour, to make it dry enough to roll out properly. (A bit sticky, of course, but not wet.)

       3.  Preheat the oven, 325-deg F.

       4.  Roll out the dough (around 1/4 inches thickness) and grab some cookie cutters!

       5.  Bake for 8-10 minutes, until golden brown.

  2. When it comes to sugar cookies, I have to say, unfortunately, no. Not in my searches for them, anyway. In my experience, I have also tried to use butter substitutes or such and it simply does not work.  There are other recipes that do not call for butter, such as oatmeal raisin.  Your friend is used to going without butter, I'm sure that another type of cookies will make him just as happy, especially since you took the time to consider him. Good luck!

  3. Seems like there is a simple Italian cookie that uses olive oil... Gaida DeLaurantis or Mario Batali may have a recipe for it on Food Network .com

  4. You can use Milled Flax Seed and water instead of butter or oil, the Flax seed is cheap like 2$ a box at wal-mart and they have the instructions on the side of the box, as for how much water and flax seed to use to replace the butter.
