Are there cars internationally that have way better mpg that are not imported to the US?

  1. I believe the answer is yes, but they can't be imported into the U.S. because they don't have the necessary safety items installed to allow there use here.


  2. Plenty of diesel-powered cars available in Europe can get 30-40mpg.  They are not allowed to be sold in the United States because they do not meet the Environmental Protection Agency's emissions standards.

    Carmakers like VW and Mercedes have been trying to improve on their diesels' emissions however, and some are now clean enough to be street-legal in the U.S. and can be sold here, such as these model year 2009 diesels:  http://www.fueleconomy.gov/f*g/compx2008...
