Are there certain house plans that are cheaper to build than others?

We picked out a 4br ranch plan & the builder told us it was very pricey due to all the corners. It was only 1496 sq ft. We thought by keeping our sq footage down we would be ok. Is it true it would be better to do a 4br 2 story as opposed to a 4br ranch? I thought a 2 story would be way expensive.We really know nothing and need help picking a plan. He told us to find some others we liked & give them to him for another price but we really don't know where to start.

A two story in a basic "salt-box" design will cost less than the same square footage in a one-story.  With a two story, you will need half the roofing material, and you will share a ceiling and floor.  

The more "cuts" a roof has, the more expensive it will be.
