My BF said something last night that a this was the last year for a couple of sports at the Olympics, including Baseball. Is this true?? If so, what sports?

  1. baseball is pointless because nobody else really takes it seriously.  might as well put in dodgeball.

  2. baseball and softball. softball may be being eliminated cuz every year the US completely dominates. like last year they outscored their opponents like 41-1

  3. Right now softball won't be played again, unless they reinstate it.

  4. US baseball doesn't win everything...the reason for removing it is that they are trying to reduce the number of events (there are currently 301 gold medals awarded during the Olympics) and it's not watched that much as baseball fans are watching the "stars" of their game as the baseball seasons around the world are still going on during the Olympics.  Yes, it's a dumb reason as more people still watch baseball than watch certain other events like trampoline and duet synchro swimming.

Softball is being eliminated because it's embarrassing for the other teams to have to play the US.  Most of their games end within 5 innings because of the mercy rule and they currently have a 0.00 ERA in Beijing (the one run by the Canadians was an unearned run).

These sports are officially out of the Olympics for London 2012, but can petition to be reinstated for 2016 as long as everything is finalized by 2010.  This is true for all sports - they must petition by 6 years before the start of the games in which they hope to participate.  You should see some of the sports that have petitioned to be events in the Sochi 2014 Olympics this year.  Compared to some of those it is definitely a possibility that both baseball and softball could be in the Olympics again, but not for a while.

  5. baseball and softball might be taken out. they are going to have  meeting later this year to decide for sure.

cant blame em for softball. US has won every gold medal.

baseball.... US wins even with minor league players... no pro athletes on it.

  6. So when one country wins all the time they get rid of it.  Why penalize a sport because one country is dominant.  If China continues to dominate in gymnastics should they get rid of that too.  What about any sport where one country or individual always wins?
