Question:

Are there deaf people who bartend at bars?

I am deaf and considering bartending as a part time job while im in college. I am just wondering what the odds of getting hired as a bartender would be for me. I lipread and talk instead of sign language. I do know sign language but have always prefered talking over signing. I know it is very loud in a bar so getting orders from people might be easy since all I am doing is lipreading what they want.

  1. If the bar is dimly lit, you might have a problem with lipreading. Even though I can hear, I sometimes have a hard time with the way a person speaks. Only because so many of the words "look" alike and they don't speak clearly to begin with.

I don't know of any bars in my area that have deaf bartenders, but I don't think it's because they *won't* hire a deaf person. I think it's more likely that deaf people don't usually apply for a bar tending job.

Good luck to you. I hope you can land the job. It's not bad money, and you can get decent tips.
