I just want to know if there are blu rays that will fit the whole screen when you watch them instead of black bars or does that depend on the aspect ratio because one of my blu rays has a ratio of 1.85 to 1 and it takes up the whole screen.

  1. Any HDTV should be in a wide screen aspect ratio anyways. So it should always take up the whole screen. There aren't two types of blu rays because all HD format is filmed and produced in widescreen. So unless your television that your using is an HDTV with an aspect ration of 4:3 which is rare, but I've seen them, it should be automatically fitting the picture to your full television screen.

  2. As you suspect Blu-ray are widescreen. Depending on the aspect ratio of the program material there may or may not be top/bottom or side bars.

On a 1.78:1 (16:9) display a 1.85:1 film will NOT (quite) fill the screen unless it is slightly enlarged or stretched vertically. See the link for a diagram showing how various aspect ratios relate to each other (constant width).

If a Blu-ray version of a 1.33:1 (4:3) film is viewed it will have side bars.
