Question:

Are there exceptions to Pitbulls, Staffordshires, and Dogos in Apartments?

My pitbull is in training to be a Canine Good Citizen and then a Therapy Dog. I was curious that if an apartment complex has restrictions on the breed, then it would be allowed if it was registered as a therapy dog. Any one know?

  1. Asking the person who owns and/or rents out the apartments is the only way to find out.

  2. depends on the city ordinances and apt guidlines.

  3. If the dog is a service dog to YOU and is a therapy dog to YOU, its allowed in. They, by law, can't refuse you unless it states in the lease that the breed can't live on the premises.

  4. It really depends on your County/State. I recently went through this.  My friend's pitty was a rescue/ assistance dog and the guy who he was assigned to lived in a complex with bans on Pit Bulls. The guy could not afford to move and he contacted my friend asking for another breed. My friend didn't have one ready yet so she helped him out, he was an older man and didn't have the internet or ways to contact different people.

My friend started by contacting the owner of the complex and explaining it was a certified assistance dog, he didn't care.  My friend then called the County Court House and explained the situation.  Animal control came and took a look at the dog and the certificate and the man's need for the dog and made a ruling that the owner HAD to allow this dog in the complex.

However, I do know that some other states, Iowa for instance they don't care its up to the owner of the complex.  I would contact the county court house explain the situation and see if animal control can get a ruling if the owner of the complex is unwilling to work with you on it.

  5. Contact the apartment complex management. Ask them what their policy is on allowing therapy dogs, regardless of breed. They may not allow due to insurance company, however, if you contact the insurance company and show them the dog's certification,  they may allow the complex to be insured with the dog there.
