My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Hawaii for our 5 year anniversary next February. We planned on first staying in Oahu for the first 4 nights and would like to fly over to Maui for the remainder of the trip. Are there flights from island to island in Hawaii? Where can we go to check that out?

  1. Yes. www.hawaiianair.com

  2. Yes, you have quite a few options for island hopping. If you would like to fly jets, I recommend Hawaiian Air. Mesa Airlines subsidiary go! also runs jets, but locals avoid it when we can, because of the role their predatory pricing and misuse of confidential bankruptcy information played in the demise of Aloha Airlines after more than 60 years of operations.

Island Air runs DeHavilland Dash-8 turboprops (propellor planes about the size of a school bus) back and forth everyday, and they accumulate frequent flier miles on Continental if you ask them to. If you are looking to fly to one of the islands that only have one public high school (Molokai, Lanai), Island Air is the largest plane you're going to get on those routes.

For photography, I prefer the nine-seaters of small airlines like Pacific Wings. The windows are bigger and less scratched up. The pilots fly closer to the mountains and the cities. Only thing is, you should eat after you fly on the smaller airlines. The pilots of Pacific Wings ask that if you do use your aloha bag, you take it with you when you deplane.

And these days, the Superferry seems to be running regularly between Honolulu and Kahului. They celebrated their 125,000 passenger the other day. It was a Maui man taking his daughter to college on Oahu.

  3. Yes, Island Air, Hawaiian, and Go airlines fly to the other Islands.

  6. Yes, there is Hawaiian Airlines, Go Airlines, and Island Air. You can check their websites for flight info. Also, you can take the ferry, called Superferry. It goes to Maui from Oahu and back, every day. It's an additional way of traveling. Slower, but you see more. For info, see here: http://www.hawaiisuperferry.com/

And for additional island info about Oahu and Maui, see here: http://www.to-hawaii.com/

  7. Another option you should consider is to book it as a multi-city flight.  On the Hawaiian Airlines site (http://www.hawaiianair.com), there's a drop-down list where you can choose round trip, one way, or multi-city.  If you choose multi-city, it will allow you to enter all of your destinations and arrival and departure dates, then it will show you the available fares, which are often cheaper than booking the flights separately.
