I'll like to travel on a Sunday between Madrid in the later afternoon to San Sebastian. Also, does anyone have an idea of the train fare amounts in US dollars?

  1. Sure you can go by train!!

I'm so envious.  Last July I was in San Sebastian, and then went on to Madrid by train.  But I left from Bilbao, and not San Sebastian, because I really wanted to experience riding on the Talgo.  It was such a nice trip.

Here is the website where you can check dates, times and costs.  Note that there are different types of trains which make this particular route.

    http://horarios.renfe.es/hir/ingles.html

Where it says "origin," type in Madrid

Where it says "destination," type in San Sebastián/Donostia

I did not purchase my tickets online from this site, because I wanted flexibility.  But as soon as I was in Bilbao, I went straight to the train station to get them ( a week before I needed them).  I recommend you get your tickets early, because while at the station I saw others who could not get the times they wanted, as reservations fill up in summer, especially in August.

I think you are going to love travelling by train in Spain.  (We also took the AVE from Madrid to Seville, and a smaller train from Seville to Málaga - all of them were wonderful!

If you've never been to San Sebastián, you're in for a treat.  It is clearly one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.

  2. Yes.

    There is also a sleeper.

    see Renfe.es

  3. Of course we have reliable and good trains (!!!)

  4. On Sundays, there is at train at 14:05, arriving in San Sebastian at 19:23 (7:23 PM) for 54.60 euros (about 75 USD), and another at 14:42, arriving at 21:23  for 35.80 euros (abt 49 USD).

There are earlier trains on weekdays.

I spent a few weeks in Spain, and found the trains reliable.

Most long distance trains have a movie (in Spanish).

But be warned that you usually have to put your luggage through the x-ray machine, as at the airport.
