  1. Tony is right about the permit.  You may want to contact the Tropical Science Center (they manage the park and have an office and a lodge located at the entrance to the park).

    Their web site is http://www.cct.or.cr

    (in spanish)

My wife and I have stayed in the lodge - the beds are a bit tough but being able to get up early in the morning and walk straight into the park is phenomenal.

  2. yes, but you can find similar(less people)  hiking trails in Santa María de Dota.

  3. Yes, they are excellent. Very beautiful, and also well-constructed and fairly mud-free.  There are 12km of well-constructed easy trails, plus some longer, less built-up (muddier) trails leading further off, these have shelters you can stay in overnight.  I think you need to reserve or get a permit to use those  trails and shelters.

I've heard some of the easy trails have been temporarily shut down, you might want to check the website.

also, the Santa Elena reserve has similar forest and  fewer visitors.
