I want to try using ActionScript 3.0 but I need to know if there are huge differences that I need to know of because I don't want to start trying it and find out most of the stuff that's supposed to work in ActionScript 2.0 doesn't work on it.

  1. Short Answer?  They are very different.  Go to http://www.actionscript.org/

and probe around there.  You can even post questions there.  I live there

  2. ActionScript 3.0 is very different. It's almost a completely different programming language, and some developers even see it as such. If you're thinking about making the switch to 3.0, I say go for it. AS 3.0 is far superior to 2.0 in many areas.

Everything that you can do in AS 2 you can do in AS 3, so I wouldn't worry about that.
