There are many indigenous peoples in Ecuador.  A large portion of the population claims indigenous or at least mestizo (part indigenous, part European) roots.  Many of these groups are cultures that were once part of the Incan empire (many of them had been subjugated for centuries under Incan rule prior to the arrival of the Spanish, who subjugated them further).
