  1. There is no widely accepted international standard for rating hotels worldwide. Various travel publications have their own proprietary systems. Travel websites may have their own system. Some countries have their own local rating system, although many do not. Occasionally, a hotel simply makes up its own rating for marketing purposes (note the infamous "seven star" hotel in the Middle East).

    However, none can be directly compared because they all use their own rating standards. A hotel that has three stars on one system may be a two star or a four star on another. Your best bet is to look at multiple sources and compare the descriptions.
