I'm going into my junior year of physics, so I can handle some math, but I'm planning on reading this in my free time and I don't want to spend my Christmas break with a piece of paper trying to derive equations and doing self-prescribed homework sets. Looking for something similar to or slightly heavier than An Elegant Universe was for string theory.

I read this in my junior year of highschool.  It's a bit long, but is more of a pleasant read.  I read this before I went to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and was well versed in nuclear/atomic physics.  Highly recommended!
