Are there many pubs in trouble in your area?

In my home town I've noticed that a lot of pubs seem quiet during the week since the smoking ban.

Yes, studies show that pubs are closing at an alarming rate.

It's not just the smoking ban. In fact, the trend started with the drink driving bans, which made it harder for people to go out after work for a drink.

I try to visit my "locals" once a week, just to keep them in business!

I've noticed people just huddled outside smoking.  There has been a huge difference now though, since the smoking ban.  Some of the newer places seem to be shutting down too, but, I think it has a lot to do with the economy too.

about 30 pubs a week is the rate. the smoking ban dosnt help but its the credit crunch that is killing pubs as brewries are putting up the rent so high that small pubs just cant cope, my partner has a pub and luckliy we are ok as we have a long lease but other people arnt so lucky.

for instance if rent was £18,000 a year 3 yrs ago it is now £28,000 thats a huge hike

i live in dagenham essex - the the past 2 years at least 6 pubs have gone - not just because of the no  smoking thing more the prices if they kept them as they were (half smoking half for eating ) they might still be here  cheers to the govenment

Well, around here it's not that the smoking ban is putting them out of business, it's that the customers are sick of paying the inflated prices set by the publicans so they drink at home with cheap beer and spirits from German discount stores.

a few have closed down where i live, its not just the smoking ban its the ever increasing price of a pint of beer, this government has done more to close pubs than any other, with there tax on beer and wines every year.

I like the smoking areas - you meet loads of random people you would never normally speak to!

One thing I have noticed...folks walkin and bikin to the bars...

Drunk bikin...that's what they'll get ya for next.

I live in a multi-college town that has a fairly good tourist supply as well so it's not to bad.

I have heard restaurant owners/managers who have a bar sayin biz is down..

I'm rural so??? but the lads i work with are all saying the pubs are dead in the week if not closed? Our government have taken away a very simple pleasure! what the h**l will they do next? only a matter of time before it costs you a fortune to stop in your own house at night!!!!!!
