I live in a very old building and I think I have mice inside of my walls? How do I find out if this is true or not? If so(?) what can I do about it?

  1. Check with mechanical traps, if you use poison they may die in the wall and stink. Or call a profesional exterminator fo an estimate to check and remove.

  2. You can buy poisoned bait, which should be sprinkled onto a piece of paper or a paper plate so you can remove uneaten bait easily and safely.

  3. You can listen at night,,, it is the best time to hear them... Traps seem to be the best way also look at the hardware store for poisons...

  4. If you think you do, you probably do.  The rodents may also be rats.

If you rent, contact your landlord and tell him that rodents are in the walls, that it constitutes a health hazard, and that he has a legal obligation to do something.  If he stalls, a quick call to a legal aid foundation can tell you whom to complain to to jump-start your landlord into action.  You should not have to deal with that problem.

If you have to do it yourself (i.e. you own the place), here's a three-step process that's guaranteed to work:

    I. Identify a place in the wall, as close to floor-level as possible, where the rodents run.

    2. Tap a cutting implement into the drywall and cut a hole approximately one inch in diameter.  You can use almost any kind of knife, drywall is not too hard to cut.

    3. Buy a box of D-Con mouse and rat pellets.  D-Con is a "one-feed" poison that is very effective.  Make a paper funnel and pour the pellets into the wall.  Seal the hole with something the rodents can't chew through, like steel wool.

The rodents will die within 3 days, and stink for a few days more.  But it will pass, and you will have a rodent-free life.  Good luck!
