are there narcotic alkaloids in any other poppy plant? Besides the one that is illegal to cultivate?

  1. I'm sure there are narcotic alkaloids in other poppies, but the yields would be much lower than somniferum, which is already so low that it's only cultivated in the poorest countries.  Also, I don't think morphine is found in other poppies and with different alkaloid content comes different levels of toxicity.

    Note that simple cultivation of opium poppies is not illegal in the US or most other countries.  Look into your local laws.

    Otherwise farmers in afghanistan would be growing and making money out of that as well !
