Question:

Are there other Puerto Ricans who feel this way?

I live on the east coast and am half Puerto Rican, half white (Irish, Polish, Italian), and SOME Puerto Ricans where I live, in the tri-state area (NJ, NY, etc...) tend to be so rude and always trying to be all ghetto. I understand some of it comes from how they were raised and the areas, but a lot of them, especially the women, adopt such a "I'm better than you and I know it" attitude while the guys just have a conceited, careless attitude.

I try and be understanding, not judge them, but I feel as if I'm always on the recieving end of their remarks behind my back. I know I"m not full-latin or PR, but a lot of the women (and some of the men) especially love to condescend me and just stick their nose up because of my mixed ancestry. I love all sides of me and embrace ALL of me, but why does it feel that other Puerto Ricans are just so mean to each other and their mixed counterparts?

My best friend is full PR but he likes punk rock and isn't stereotypical and they ignore him

  1. As a generalization yes there is a lot of newyoricans that fit that description you have, however, a lot of those who live at Puerto Rico and have not lived in the tri-state area are not like that.

  2. I am Puertoriquena and I know how you feel. I am full rican but I tend to be this way and I try my best not to. At least I am aware of this. I am concieded, and I like the guys that are concieded. I dont know why. when I see a rican that likes punk rock I tend to be steriotypical and I look at them like if they were retarded b/c in my head I see ricans like how I am. I also live in the east coast. my mom is from NY (Bronx, manhattan).

  3. Well i'm going to be honest here as well...as a full Puerto Rican myself who grew up in Newark,NJ...but is not at all ghetto and nasty....and currently has a government job and makes good money and lives in the suburbs in South Jersey now....please don't judge all of us by a select few ignorant individuals as a whole...i understand some may be a bit uppity but that's in every race and culture.....my husband is African American and Filipino and he gets it sometimes from his all black family and friends sometimes too...and I have cousins who are half rican and half irish/italian...my Puerto Rican uncle married a half irish and half italian woman...and we love our cousins to death.....but sometimes they get teased too from their irish/italian side...it happens in all cultures...not just with Puerto Ricans...it's unfortunate what you're going through and i'm sure those you've encountered probably do act the way you say...but i really do think it's unfair for you to lump one culture altogether based on bad experiences with some.....and just my opinion...anything mixed with rican is the best..wink......because my beautiful daughter is Puerto Rican, black and Filipino...and i think she is blessed to be a part of so many cultures....well....however you chose to feel....good luck and i hope things get better.....

  4. ALL RIGHT, I UNDERSTAND PERFECTLY WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. OK, LET ME SEE IF I CAN EXPLAIN MYSELF. I'M ORIGINALLY FROM PUERTO RICO, BORN, AND RAISED IN THE ISLAND. I LIKE ROCK, I LOVE ART AND SPORTS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER HUMAN BEING,,, BY THIS I MEAN, YOU CAN'T JUDGE A PERSON BY BEING FROM RUSSIA, FRANCE, SOUTH AMERICA, OR PUERTO RICO IN THIS CASE.. WHAT I MEAN IS THAT, IT'S JUST ABOUT WHO I AM AND NOT WHERE I'M FROM ALTHOUGH IT DOES INFLUENCE... NONE OF MY ARE STUCK UP, THERE ARE JUST AS MANY RUDE PUERTO RICANS AS THERE ARE KIND AND OUTGOING, I TRULY THINK THAT PUERTO RICANS RAISED IN THE US HAVE TOTALLY DIFFERENT ATTITUDES THAN THE ONES RAISED IN PR AND SHOULD NO BE COMPARED!

  5. no

  6. That's life. There will be racism, diserespect, indifference etc, towards all cultures and race, whether you are puerto rican, italian, chinese, sudanese, japanese, black or whatever... It sucks, but there is no erasing it... Ignorance is the center of these issues. I am Puero Rican and Dominican and raised in the super suburbs and the "other" races treated me as garbage all my life. I am an educated, hard working intellectual, but I will always get that "race" wake up call.... I treat everyone equally as individuals, but when they come out of their face with stuff, I put them in their place!

  7. I'm not sure....My husband is Puerto Rican (full) and he gets all kinds of heat from his relatives for marrying a black woman. I look Hispanic so, at first they thought I was and accepted me, but when they found out otherwise, his family refused to speak to him for almost a year. They think that all Puerto Ricans should stay with their own kind and for some reason they can not accept mixing the races. My husband is proud of who he is but at the same time is ashamed that his culture does not allow for inter-racial relationships. We have 4 beautiful children who are just now getting to know their Hispanic family. (they are in their teens) Although he is 100%, the fact that he has united with another race gets him the same responses you mentioned.I think the mindset was established long ago that each race stay with their own. It's so sad.......
