  1. no! i live in Iowa and in my state you are allowed to put things into the landfill but you are NOT allowed to remove anything from the landfill. they claim it is because you might get hurt & they do not have insurance to cover you but they do not use that excuse to keep you from putting things INTO the landfill.. they also will not allow you to sign a waver removing the liability.

the truth is... they just don't care about our planet. common sense would say that if someone were allowed to remove things from the landfill the landfill operators jobs would be MORE secure because it would take longer for the landfill to get filled up. have you considered going to the sanitation board with a written proposal requesting that they change their current policy in order for them to become more planet friendly? then (if they say no) you could write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper asking for the public to support your idea. people are currently becoming more & more "green concious" these days. chances are you could get a petition going to change the policy with very little effort. also your local tv station would probably cover the story if (you) someone made an anonymos phone call to them telling them about your petition.

going green is becoming a huge movement these days. don't be afraid to stand up for your planet.

    have-a-loving-day!

  2. yeah... scavengers who want to make extra cash...

  3. Typically, sorters or sifters are found in recycle centers or material recovery facilites. It is a very monitored position and requires a person to look for certain items. Machinery will sort the materials. In some instances, prisoners or work release people are used.

  4. I do not think this is an official job ,the people who do that are very poor and they are volunteers .

It is a terrible job in terrible smells and a super unhealthy environment ,in the center of contamination.

  5. Yes in the US it is illegal to have public access to a landfill. Besides they are constantly burying the stuff anyway (Giant toxic land pimples). Anyway to answer your question, there is a job that dose this at "dirty m.u.r.f recycling centers". This is where citizens place all recyclable items in one bin and someone else sorts it out.

  6. As a past truck driver for a waste co. I think that it is pretty much illegal to sift through the landfills for anything. You know OSHA and stuff like that. It is a safety hazard! On all the job sites and landfills I have ever been to or heard of would not let anyone sift thru.
