  1. Think of a projector as a monitor (i.e. video only since there are no speakers (at least not useable ones), no internal tuner).

The normal practice is to send the video signal from a DVD or Blu-ray player (for movies) or a satellite or cable box (for TV) via HDMI, component, S-video, composite cable (in decreasing order of quality) to the projector, and the audio signal to a receiver and speakers.

As to the best projector to get ... as with most things it depends on your budget, program material and preferences. Projectors start at about $500 (low resolution) and go to 1080p HD projectors ($2000+).

  2. Most home theater projectors are glorified office presentation projectors, and as such don't have a built-in tuner.  Therefore, you can't plug your cable directly into them.  The require a digital input that must come from either your DVD player or cable box.
