Question

any grants available from defra or anyone else for people with land that want to keep it organic? ie, not using chemical fertilisers etc?

Yes there are grant.  They are now going to the big agra business companies.  The second that "organic" became profitable, the big agra business companies stepped in, and took over "organic."

Now all grants and subsidies go to the multi billion dollar companies.

If you do manage to find one of the grants aimed only at smaller farmers, I hope you are a black woman, of Native American heritage, who is disabled, and served in the military.  Otherwise, there is about zero chance you are going to get a grant.

I'm sure you think I'm being nasty, but actually I'm being entirely truthful, and realistic.  If you cannot boot strap it up yourself, it ain't happening.

Generally a farm has to be insecticide, herbicide, antibiotic free for at least three years to be called "organic"  There is also a waiting period on chemical fertilizers but it may not be as long.  I don't know that grants are available for "organic" farming or getting to "organic" farming.  You may have to do that on your own.

Almost all grant money is for research and not just general upkeep or to purchase a farm. Most grants are for under $10K though some are for more.

yes, it would probably be part of the single farm payment, used to be called subsidy (spelling???) try contacting the nfu, but for a farm to be organic you would have to keep it "clean" for a year before being assessed to have an organic status, hope this helps.
