Are there really cannibals in the Amazon jungle?

Because my mom is from peru and she said in one part of the amazon there is a gated area in which tourists are prohibited to go in where there are cannibals.

I don't know if there were any people who were cannibals there in the past but there aren't any now. And certainly no group of cannibals living in a gated area.

Yes, about thirty years ago my grandfather took an expedition into the Amazon, they began eating him, luckily all they ate was his arm and broke free and hid in the jungle for a month.  When he was finally found he was living in his own filth and f***s, and had shoved a twig into the bloody stump where his arm used to be and called it his "little big boy arm" .  Anyway, he went crazy and we locked him up forever!

I wouldn't doubt it, i'm sure there are cannibals everywhere, but not as pinpointed or concentrated as the area your mother has mentioned. Ask her if it's a joke, otherwise i'd say that she is serious. :-)
