I would love to adopt, but are there actually orphanages where you walk in and go over some stuff and pick out a child? Kindof like the little orphan, Annie and Stuart Little.

  1. Yeah, the Cabbage Patch Kid section over at Wal Mart.

    Have at it.

  2. No

  3. Not really any more.  Most orphanages that house older children require extensive paperwork, time and effort.  (As well as money.)

  4. There are some international adoptions where you go to the orphanage and you are shown which children are available for adoption.  The first one I can think of from the top of my head is Kazakhstan.

  5. Foster homes.

    Group homes

  6. i want to adopt 2, my auntie and uncle adopted this adorable chinese gurl she even speaks chinese and english she just turned 6

  7. No.  Those don't exist anymore.

Even if someone is adopting a child from an orphanage overseas, there is a legal process, matching a child with a family, etc.  A family doesn't simply walk in and choose a child.

  8. Hawaii hands you a lei when you get off the plane in China they hand you a child and everyone gets one

  9. There used to be ..now children are placed in foster homes until adoption

  10. What you describe was TRUE prior to the 1960s.  I don't really think this is the case in most of the world today, although it does happen in some areas.  In most international adoptions, the people in charge of adoption typically choose the child for you rather than the other way around.

My Mom's coworker from the former USSR was able to choose the child she wanted among a small group.  This is partly due to the fact that she was adopting a 3 year old vs. an infant.  The orphanage is in the village that she grew up in rather than an 'approved orphanage' for foreign adopters. Most that I have known who have done foreign adoption are told who they can adopt.
