Are there sand-dunes near Cairo (Egypt)?

I'm going to Cairo in August and was wondering if there are actual sand-dunes near Cairo (70mls/100km radius). From tourist guids I only leared about the Great Sand Sea which is near Lybia and on Google Earth it's hard to tell if there are sand dunes or if it's just plain flat dessert. Plus :-): If there are dunes near Cairo is there something 'interesting' to see in that area as well (city, ancient ruins etc)? Thanks a lot guys!!!

  1. Isn't like all of Egypt sand? Like Africa.....is all jungle :D

  2. I went to Egypt a few years ago with the military and it was awesome! Sorry to say, there are no sand dunes there. It's all flat sand. Places of interest are the pyramids, sphinx and the shopping. The people are actually pretty nice and love the American dollar (I'm assuming you're from America, sorry if you're not!) Just be careful of the peddlers around the touristy places! They don't like to give change if you buy something and they harass the h**l out of you until you buy something or until you let the local police know they are bothering you. Local law enforcement doesn't like when visitors are harassed. I'm sure you'll see a couple peddlers literally get dragged away by the cops cuz they bothered someone to much. You'll have a great experience, have fun!

  5. Is there something interesting near Cairo  !!!!!!!!!!!!

Only the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx ,  don't forget also the Cairo Museum - full of antiquities removed from ancient buildings and Pharoahs graves all over Egypt  (sorry we've got the best bits of Tuthankamon in the UK at the moment).   The Citadel of Saladin and the 'hanging church should also not be missed.

and no distance away - the stepped pyramids of Sakkura and the Museum of Memphis.

In fact when I go to Cairo there is no time to look at the sand - there is so  many more interesting and ancient things to see.

Yes the sellers are a little persistant - but their only trying to make a living - we always find that if you say politely but firmly "Sorry I am not buying anything at all at the moment" most of them will back off - do not say you will come back later to buy - they will remember you - even two years later !!!!!
