Are there savings accounts for people that can't get a checking account?

My husband and I can't qualify for a checking account for a bad mistake in the past that seems like we will never live down. Is there any way we can get a savings account at a brick-and-mortar bank or an online bank? We have over $4k for our initial deposit and about $300-400 per month to contribute.

  1. Some banks will let you have a savings account rather then a checking account you would just have to check with them. Depending on how long ago your bad mistake was and how bad of a mistake it was they will give you a checking account in due time. If you are depositing cash and you know that you are going to be putting funds in there each month most local banks will help you out

  2. Go into a small local or regional bank and speak with the manager. Explain "bad mistake" you made in the past, explain what you learned from it and where you are now. A reasonable manager should let you open accounts (checking and savings) with restrictions. Also, having your paychecks directed deposited to the bank accounts will also make the banking personnel feel better about trusting you.

    Good luck!

  3. Yes! They even have checking accounts. Try smaller or mid-size banks, and ask about foundation accounts. They will just put limits on withdrawls and deposits. It's part of the Community Reinvestment Act.

  4. If you have a "NewBridge Bank" in your area they do not do any credit checking what so ever, maybe you could get one there.  Google it and check it out. All you have to do is have $50.00 for a deposit, social security #, and a photo ID.

  5. Why can't you go to another bank for a checking account?  Try online banks.  I doubt you can't get a checking account anywhere.

Back to the question.  You should be able to get a savings account.  Of course, you wouldn't want to go to the same bank that you owe money to.  They might figure that out and grab any past due amount.  But, you should be able to go to any other bank or utilize a online bank.

  6. Open a savings account that only provides a debit card. or purchase a debit Visa card from walmart, you upload it with your money, get balances via text message, and uses just like a debit card, can use it for online bill pay, it requires you give your social security number, but  your money is hidden away from those who don't need to know you have cash on hand and not in a bank,  and when you don't want to show money in any kind of bank account. Only down fall is ,it does not draw any interest.

  7. Yes. It is called a "Savings Account". All the banks offer them.
