  1. Yup, they go to all kinds of exotic places.  Indeed, US ports tend purely container ships, no passengers.

The Open Directory lists a bunch of cargo carriers that also take passengers:

Some are "rougher" than others.  For example, http://www.aranui.com/ is borderline a cruise ship, whereas the cargo ships of http://www.nsb-reisebuero.de/english/sta... look pretty, um, industrial

  2. Yes you can cruise on freighters.  Here are a couple of web sites with information about them.  They are not like cruise ships with entertainment but you do get a room and meals.  Its best to go on the ones that carry 25 passengers or more because then they are required to have a medical staff on board.

This should give you a start on selecting a freighter cruise.

  3. Sure - but I wouldn't do it.

I've been on many (work-related business) and they are filthy. Trust me on this one. The only "clean" ships I've seen are the ones with German officers. Other than that - the galleys are a mess - filthy and rats the size of cats.

I've been everywhere you can go on a freighter ( bow to stern) and I always need to take a shower when I get off.

  4. they are about the same price as a large cruise ship , but without all the shows and glitts and glammer .. if you want to go point A to point B and sit around and read then it's for you http://www.freighterworld.com/index.html    http://www.geocities.com/freighterman.ge...  check these out
