  1. It has been a long time ago, but yes there have been shark attacks there, both in the ocean and in Matawan Creek.  I also found a site advertising that they take people out to fish for sharks.

Recently I visited the Jenkinson's aquarium on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant. Overall, it is a very nice aquarium, especially for the kids. Down at the shark tank, I thought about the attacks that occurred along the Jersey shore in 1916.

Many people are unaware of this story since it is now almost a century old. Here is what happened: On July 1, 1916, 24 year-old Charles Vansant of Philadelphia was attacked and killed by a shark off Beach Haven (Long Beach Island). On July 6, Charles Bruder, a 28 year-old Swiss native, was killed by a shark at Spring Lake. Bruder was an employee of the Essex and Sussex Hotel in Spring Lake.

On July 12, twelve year-old Lester Stillwell is mauled and killed by a shark in the Matawan Creek (yes, creek!) miles from the ocean. Shortly thereafter, 24 year-old Stanley Fisher is killed (presumably by the same shark) while searching for Stillwell's body. Finally, 12 year old Joseph Dunn is attacked in the same creek. Dunn survived.

On the way home from Point Pleasant, I got off exit 117 and found the spot where the Matawan attacks occurred back in 1916. It's at the end of Dock Street which is off Main Street. Dock Street is a dead end but you can see the creek in the distance."
