Are there signs your water is about to break?

I am 38 weeks pregnant and I was wondering if there are any signs or symptoms that your water is about to break, whether your having contractions or not.

I'm not having any contractions but all of a sudden I started getting a sensation of burning down there. And it got really heavy too. The baby has already dropped so it's not that. It doesn't hurt, just weird feeling. Did anyone else experience this at all?

  1. I had no signs at all.  I woke up in the morning, got out of bed and my water broke.  My body did not contract naturally, so my labor was induced 5 hours later.

  2. A good sign is when you lose your mucus plug

  3. I think it's a bit different for everyone - I didn't experience the sudden rush with any of my three children. For my first, my mucus plug just gradually started disintegrating around 37 weeks and I gave birth 3 days later after 17 hours of labor. My other two were just variations of the same experience, but I never had a deluge. It just looks like a thick discharge and kind of feels like you're on your period all day for however long it lasts (you know, the dampness, etc.) In fact, I actually used pads for those days.

It's normal either way, so no worries :-) Just relax.

  4. Mine was sudden.  The first one I was asleep and thought I wet the bed, lol.  The second baby, I was walking out of the shower into my bedroom when a gush just hit me.  No contractions until hours later.

  5. There really are no symptoms, but signs you can look for:

    Signs of water breaking

Typically when your water breaks, you will feel a gush of water followed by a steady, uncontrollable leaking. Some women have noted a distinct popping feeling right before their water breaks. Even still, there are others who experience atypical symptoms such as a trickling of fluid or generalized wetness in the perineal area.

Vaginal fluid and discharge increase toward the end of pregnancy, this can sometimes be confused with amniotic fluid. Conversely, leaking amniotic fluid may be mistaken of urine or other vaginal fluid. It is imperative to have a health care provider evaluate any instances of possible leaks or ruptures in the bag of water.

Any time there is a rupture or leak in the amniotic membrane this opens an entry way for germs and infection. In full term pregnancies, labor usually begins within 24 hours from the time of the water breaking. If labor does not begin spontaneously, your baby and you are at greater risk for infection. The longer your water has been broken the greater your chance of infection.

sorry to say i never got the chance to go through that, my doctor induced me two days before my due date

  6. I had different experiences with my 1st and 2nd babies.

My 2nd baby arrived 3 weeks early.

I awoke one morning to broken water.  It did not gush out.  It was a trickling of light pink to clear fluid.  I do not recall any burning sensation.

I was told that when my water broke, it was time to call the doctor even if you aren't having pains.

When I got into the labor/delivery room, the nurse put some kind of a test paper on the outside v****a area.  It reacted by turning a specific color, which indicated that yes indeed it was my water that broke.

I got into the hospital around 10 a.m., and the baby was born at 2:03 p.m.

  7. i had burning right around then too.  my water broke 5 days before i was due.  i was very heavy down there also and do remember burning.  although i didnt see any signs that my water was going to break, when it did the night before i went into labor, it was slow, it didnt all gush at once.  it was more like an unvoluntary pee, and then it would happen again if i stood up and then it would happen alittle more a half hour later, but when i started getting cramp like feelings every couple minutes we decided to head to the hospital and good thing we did because it started breaking more in the car, although still not a gush, even at the hospital, it was still just leaking.  good luck, its normal though to feel burning and heavy.  you may also have more mucus discharge now.  they talk about a mucus plug coming out, mine never did.

  8. Yes, you p**s
