Question:

Are there sloths in Ecuador?

I'm here for a year. I'm 9 months into it and getting ready for my second trip into the jungle. I've read and seen stuff about sloth sightings nearby where I'm going (Tena, Misahualli). Anybody ever seen one first-hand there?

  1. I have also heard of sightings but have yet to see any on trips to Quito....lol

  2. I did happen to catch a glimpse of a sloth for maybe 3 seconds. By the time we passed by on the canoe it was out of sight before half the people even realized it was over on the shore. I did go to Misahualli but didn't see any there. Be careful of the little monkeys there, one of them bit my friend (he is from Ecuador). I saw the sloth near the Bataburo Lodge in the Huaorani territory in January of 2000.

  3. Sloths are rarely seen in the jungles of Ecuador. They mainly live in the jungle of Tambopata, Madre de Dios in southeastern Peru. Not even in the jungle of Iquitos (Peru) in the Amazon jungle you can see many sloths. It is one of Peru's endangered species right now.
