Question:

Are there stereotypes you fit into without realizing?

Have you ever been in a situation where you are doing something, saying something, wearing something, etc, and someone tells you that it's a typically g*y move, and you're all, "Wha? I didn't know that... Well that fits then."

This is kind of an example: I went to France this summer for study abroad, and one of the girls on the trip told me I dress like Ellen. I was flattered, I guess. I always just thought I dressed as I liked, but I examined my wardrobe and researched some common stereotypes (nerdy, I know) and it turns out I kind of dress like a stereotypical L*****n, and I didn't intend it.

Anyone else... ?

I've just been itching to ask a question, so sorry if it's kinda lame.

  1. I fit the stereotype of a lipstick L*****n,

I care about my looooks way too much >.<

  2. im straight (well metro.... but whatever) and i always fall into those sterotypes. a love for fashion and having good taste suddenly makes you 100% g*y.

  3. Kind of. I cut my hair off recently and I wear combat boots a lot which I guess fits in with the L*****n stereotype. Also I'm incredibly indecisive which is a bisexual stereotype.

  4. i wear alot of baggy clothes lol.. i guess in the  bush L*****n stereotype

  5. As far as race yes: I'm always late.

But as far as sexual preferance: as a bisexual I don't think I have any stereotypes...If I do let me know.

In that case yes, I didn't realize then:

    I played softball

    I'm a musician

I can dress my a$$ off

I used to feel the b***s on manneguins (my girl said I should've known something was up when I started doing that)

  6. This is not a lame question at all. It underscores how the effects of culture, stereotypes, personal desires, expression, attitudes and so much more are much more intertwined and complex than we thought it to be.

It isn't just a matter of "I'm g*y, I have to dress/act/talk a certain way." I don't know of any g*y person who decides on it consciously - that is, "I better talk in a high pitch starting now!" does not enter our minds, does it? And despite being oblivious to certain stereotypes, we still "go" into them, strangely!

(Mine is that g*y men supposedly dress fashionably, and I've always been a big fan of comfort, and choose clothes on that basis. But people repeatedly come up to me to say "You always look great in your clothes" - and they don't believe me when I say that I just grab whatever I see in the closet first thing in the morning! They think I spend hours with my "grooming"!)

This is precisely why stereotypes have to be combatted (at least the harmful ones) There is an unconscious level in which we already accept them as "truth", because such is the pervasive influence of culture and stereotypes. One I can think of is "g*y men molest children" - nothing could be further from the truth if you check out statistical data (overwhelmingly, child molesters are of the heterosexual variety, usually an older man/relative and a young female survivor) -  but that notion still exists today, in 2008!

In your case, I'd say it was a compliment - I like how Ellen dresses.

  7. I mess with my hair a lot until I get it how I like it.

  8. Kind Of-I care A LOT about how I look!

  9. I play rugby and I watch L*****n soap operas like the L Word and SON.

I guess I do fit some of the stereotypes, even though I am a femme.

  10. i only wear makeup really when going clubbing

    i played rugby/hockey goalie

    i wear baggy clothes

    i am musical and artistic

woops should of known! and yeah thats really funny i dont have every day handbags i have one of those bmx bags!!

  11. The only stereotype I can think of for bisexuals is that we're selfish, but I don't consider myself selfish, so no.

But if you can find out some more stereotypes, I'll be glad to give you my input and see if I fit.
