  1. For a start, Elizabeth II queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Elizabeth II is also the monarch of a number of other countries, each of which are independent but share a sovereign. This is called a “Personal Union”. The relevant countries are Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

    There are a number of other realms with Kings or Queens or such local language titles as are equivalent. These include: Bahrain (King Hamad ibn Isa al-Khalifah), Belgium (King Albert II), Cambodia (King Norodom Sihamoni), Jordan (King Abdullah II), Lesotho (King Letsie III), Morocco (King Mohammed VI), Nepal (King Gyanendra), Norway (King Harald V), Saudi Arabia (King Abdullah), Swaziland (King Mswati III), Thailand (King Bhumibol Adulyadej), Denmark (Queen Margrethe II), Netherlands (Queen Beatrix), Spain (King Juan Carlos I), Sweden (King Carl XVI Gustaf) and Tonga (King George Tupou V)

    However, Kings or Queens are not the only monarchs; there are a number of other titles which are monarchial in nature. The following details these sovereigns.

    Andorra has two Co-Princes, the President of France and Bishop of Urgell. Bhutan has a Druk Gyalpo or 'Dragon King' and he is Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck. Kuwait has an Emir, called Sabah Al-Sabah. Qatar also has an Emir, who is called Hamad bin Khalifa. Japan has an Emperor, known as Akihito, but in Japan, the people are sovereign. Luxembourg has a Grand Duke called Henri. Malaysia has a Paramount Ruler, elected from a group of hereditary rulers. The current office holder is Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin. The Vatican City (Holy See) is ruled by the Pope, Benedict XVI who is an elected monarch. The United Arab Emirates is headed by a President, elected by the Emirs of the Emirates from among their numbers, but this is traditionally the Emir of Abu Dhabi, currently Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahayan. Liechtenstein has a Prince, called Hans-Adam II. Monaco has a prince, called the Sovereign Prince, currently Albert II. Brunei, has a Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah. Oman is ruled by a Sultan known as Qaboos.

  9. Yes, there are Kings today. There are African Kings, there are

    Scandinavian Kings, Danish Kings, and Egyptian Kings. I do

    not know if they are all reigning, but they do exist.
