Question:

Are there such a thing as Thunderbirds?

There is a man called Red Elk who in interviews has said that he has seen birds he calls THunderbirds in Canada.

He says "Thunderbirds, with wingspans that average 22 feet, have breeding grounds in South America, and are slowly coming back to the U.S., said Red Elk. The Cree Indians are protectorates of an earlier breeding ground in Yukon, Canada, a "sacred bird cave," that has relics of eggs that were the size of bowling balls, he shared."

Has anyone else heard of this creature?

  1. Yes there are cars named that but not bird birds

  2. Here's a nice article about Thunderbirds. I am part Cree, but I don't know much about my Cree heritage ( I really should delve into that).

  3. 45th Infantry Division (Oklahoma National Guard) from Oklahoma are the Thunderbirds.

  4. It depends on what"thunder bird" you are talking about.

Some people say the "thunder bird" was a native american myth, made up when  some tribe or another found the bones of some kind of extinct bird or dinosaur. Then there are the austrailian ones, which did exist:

(lol, if you are a fan of "Final Fantasy" these looked like "Chocobos").

There have been sightings, recently, of another large bird, as talked about in this discussion:

    anything can happen,lol

  5. As usual since the YA skeptics are incapable of actually providing information I will answer the question for you (link to article below).

Judging size of birds or anything else in the air with no indication of how high they are, how far away they are, and having no point of reference like say one sitting on the branch of a tree where the whole tree is visible to you is almost impossible.

This legend probably began as the article (yes an actual source of information) explains when large birds riding on air currents would arrive right before thunder and lightning storms and thus were given the name "thunder birds".

It is certainly possible as every reputable biologist and zoologist freely admits for an unusually large bird (though perhaps not a 22 feet wing span) to exist or have existed due to a mutation of some type which would have added fuel to the legend of their size. No, the skeletal remains of one giant mutant bird is not likely to be found just as we have found far less than 1% of the dinosaurs that once roamed the Earth.

  9. Thunderbirds are creatures featured in the mythology of certain cultures.  They do not exist outside of lore.  Don't you think something that large would be known by biologists by now?

  10. I've heard of the myth before. This is a Native American myth and there really isn't any physical evidence for it. The largest known bird is the wandering albatross, at 11 feet wingspan or so. A 22 foot wingspan bird would have an awfully hard time not being spotted before now.
