Question:

Are there video surveilance cameras that I can connect to 5E wire?

I have Cat 5e wire going to all rooms of my home, and I have them also on the exterior of my house ( going through the wall) and terminating just under the soffit at every corner of the house. I now have a heavy duty internet based security camera that I can hook up, but it also requires a 120 Volt power supply along with the 5e wire. Are there any surveilance type of cameras that you know of that only require the cat 5e wire?

  1. To the best of my knowledge, non-networked security cameras need:

    1) One pair of wires to send the video signal.

    2) One pair of wires to provide power to the camera. This is typically low power. It may take a 120 volt AC walll wart, but the output from that transformer is something WAY less than 120 volts.

    3) Optional one pair of wires to provide an audio signal if the camera has a built-in microphone.

Cat5 wiring has 4 pairs of wires - that means there is a spare pair for the low voltage power.

To the best of my knowledge, wired ethernet (LAN) connected cameras need two pairs of wires for 10baseT but to be certified, all 4 pair need to be terminated on both ends - whether they are used for anything or not. This also means that Cat5 should be able to get up to 100baseT (actually 1000baseT) but when actually using only 2 or 3 pairs there is a spare pair for low power (that is how "Power over Ethernet" works.

    I use these:

and their video is sent over Cat5, but I installed power (and battery backup) at each camera...

    They feed one of these:

And the monitor out from the DVR uses the spare pairs throughout the house to connect to each of the TVs' extra video-in jacks so each TV has access to view the CCTV quad image...
