Is the proposition IN correct in final position?

2) She got sad to hear that, so the only thing she needed was a friendly shoulder to cry on.

3) He wants a friend to spend the whole evening playing soccer with.

  1. Most English teachers will tell you that ending a sentence with a preposition is not proper grammar. I personally don't believe that, those sentences sound fine to me.

    1) I'm looking for a good place to live. (Adding "in" sounds a bit redundant)

    2) She was sad to hear that, and the only thing she needed then was a friendly shoulder to cry on.

    3) He wants to spend the whole evening playing soccer with a friend.


  2. 1) I'm looking for a good place to live in. (Although some English teachers may complain about a preposition ending a sentence, 99% of people will say it like this.

    2) After having heard this, she became sad, and the only thing she needed was a friendly shoulder to cry on.

    3) He wants a friend who he can spend the whole evening playing soccer with.

  3. Good place to live at

    She became sad

    whole evening to play soccer with

    (or better still) wants a friend with whom he can spend the whole evening playing soccer
