Question:

Are these AS Levels acceptable?

It's just, I'm choosing them today, and I was wondering what everyone thought of the following:

Drama Studies

English Literature

Psychology

Physics

Do they sound alright? I'll probably end up doing drama or english at Uni, but I was hoping to keep my options open - what do you think?

  1. I agree. Physics is no good on its own,  it needs to be with maths or another science.  If you have no intention of following a science future, it will be irrelevant.  A level has a huge maths background, and is a lot of work.  Get advice from your college when you enrole.

  2. You're doing two soft options there, and some universities may use that as positive discrimination to filter the candidates. If you want to do English at university, possibly something like history would be more worthwhile than psychology, and keeping your drama would leave the door open for that path.

  3. they're good. You're keeping your options open, but still have a more specific path!

  4. Don't do English Literature, an Essay to write every weekend.

  5. The Physics is a little random and is not worth doing unless ur going to do Maths or Chemistry with it.  Science subjects are also meant to be very demanding subjects to do for A-levels, they are a big step forward from GCSEs.  I would do another humanity that would go with the other 3 subjects.  However, if u want to do a science, the best one would be biology as it goes quite well with psychology.

  6. Carcrashheart: There are such things as soft A Levels. Why do you think top universities refuse to acknowledge them, and many schools don't do them?

Gives the list of ones not accepted.

You're not really keeping your options open; physics is useless on its own. If you do choose to carry on with Physics, you'll need another science or Maths to go with it. Studying drama won't get you anywhere - it doesn't guarantee a job and it's useless unless you want to teach it. But if you've got your heart set on drama, I'd suggest swapping the psychology for something more academic like biology, chemistry or maths to back the physics up. There's no point in doing physics if your other subjects clash with it.

  7. Eng Literature and Physics are well respected subjects. But depends on what type of uni you want to go to, red brick universities are really hard to get into. Best thing i would do is look in different university prospectus and see what subjects they expect you to have for english and drama. Alot of people are going to university and english is really competitive.

  8. Heyy,

Yeah they are good subjects, however combined i don't think they are so good! Because physics is a really hard subject and you'll find it incredibly hard to cope with it without maths a level. Maybe if you changed psychology to maths it would be a better approach to take! bear that in mind!

    Hope this helped,

    good luck

  9. There are no soft options at A-Level; nobody has studied every single A-Level, and some people find some things more difficult than others. Also, more academic subjects such as English Lit and Physics have more difficult concepts which is why others are seen as soft options (basically not traditional), although psychology is also difficult. That comment above was therefore unnecessary.

You should take into account when choosing your options what you are going to enjoy - you have to spend the next 1-2 years studying them. If that's what you want to do, do it, and yes it does keep your options open.
